FALMOUTH, Maine — At 8:11 a.m., Falmouth Engine 2 was dispatched for smoke in the area of 309 U.S. Route 1. A large smoke column was located in the woods behind 360 U.S. Route 1. Engine 2 requested Engine 4 and Utility 5 (UTV) and advanced up a 300-foot steep dirt access road toward a cell tower with tools, water cans, and backpack tanks.
Assistant Chief Colin Shea established command in the 360 U.S. Route 1 parking lot. Crews reported a 50x50 woods fire burning deep into the ground about 250 feet from the top of the access road with difficult footing. Command requested Falmouth Engine 1 (call company) and North Yarmouth’s brush truck and UTV.

Utility 5 shuttled personnel and equipment up the access road while Engine 4 assisted stretching a supply line to Engine 2’s crew. Assistant Chief Jay Hallett was assigned Operations at the top of the access road. Water was pumped from Route 1 to the North Yarmouth brush truck and then into the woods to extinguish the fire.
The fire was contained and knocked down just before 9:30 a.m. Crews overhauled hot spots for about 30 more minutes. The Maine Forest Service located the remains of a small campfire in the area.

All three Falmouth engines and Utility 5 responded, along with North Yarmouth’s brush truck and UTV. Falmouth Ambulance 2 initially staged but was reassigned to a medical call elsewhere. Westbrook covered the West Falmouth station and Cumberland covered Falmouth Central. There were no injuries. All units cleared at 10:06 a.m.
Falmouth Fire-EMS reminds residents that open burning permits are required and to use the “Drown, Stir, Drown, Feel” method to fully extinguish campfires. More information: https://www.falmouthme.org/669/Burn-Permits
