AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit–Unsolved has introduced a “Cold Case Deck of Cards” featuring 52 unsolved homicides and long-term suspicious missing person cases. The cards will be distributed in correctional facilities across the state to encourage tips that could advance investigations.

According to the agency, Maine currently has 69 unsolved homicides and 38 long-term suspicious missing person cases. Similar decks have been used in other states for nearly two decades and have been credited with helping generate leads in multiple homicide investigations. This is Maine’s first deployment of the concept.
The project was funded through a grant from Season of Justice, a nonprofit that supports cold case work. Investigators selected cases from across Maine based on investigative need and the potential for public assistance, then worked with a design partner to customize each card. Officials emphasized that this first deck represents only part of Maine’s unsolved cases, with additional decks planned.
Distribution will occur in partnership with the Maine Department of Corrections. Investigators noted that incarcerated individuals may possess information or historical context relevant to open cases. Detective Corporal Michael Chavez is coordinating the rollout and will manage any information that comes in.
This effort stands out as a practical, innovative approach that keeps victims’ stories visible in a setting where useful information can surface. By adapting a proven idea to Maine’s needs and funding it through a targeted cold-case grant, investigators are adding a cost-effective tool to their work while maintaining focus on facts and public help.
Members of the public who have information related to an unsolved case are encouraged to contact Detective Corporal Michael Chavez at 207-624-7076 (ext. 9).
