A nighttime crash on Route 101 in Candia left one passenger seriously injured after two vehicles struck the same moose, prompting a temporary westbound closure while crews cleared debris.

At approximately 8:10 p.m., State Troopers responded near mile marker 68 for reports that two vehicles had hit a moose. Investigators determined a Mazda 3 traveling eastbound initially struck the animal, which then crossed the median into the westbound lanes and was struck by a Kia Sportage.

The Mazda’s driver was not injured. An adult passenger in the Kia was transported to Elliot Hospital with serious injuries. Both vehicles were towed due to damage. The moose was euthanized at the scene because of injuries from both collisions.

Route 101 westbound was temporarily closed during cleanup. Troopers were assisted by Candia Fire and Rescue. Drivers are reminded that fall brings increased wildlife activity; use high beams when able, remain vigilant, and manage speed to improve reaction time to animals in the roadway.
