SOMERSWORTH, N.H. — A pedestrian and his dog died following a motor vehicle crash on Old Rochester Road near Hickory Lane late Friday afternoon, according to a Somersworth Police Department press release.
Officials said that at approximately 4:40 p.m., Somersworth police and fire personnel, along with Stewart’s ambulance, were dispatched for a report of a crash involving a vehicle, a pedestrian, and a canine. Responders arrived to find an adult male in the roadway who was not conscious or breathing. Life-saving efforts were performed but were unsuccessful, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries believed to have been sustained after being struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian’s dog was also found deceased.
Police said the vehicle involved and its operator remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The operator was evaluated as part of the on-scene investigation and was determined not to be impaired.
The Strafford County Regional Accident Reconstruction Team responded to conduct the technical investigation. Old Rochester Road was closed for several hours to allow investigators to document the scene.
Authorities said the names of the pedestrian and the driver are being withheld at this time. The driver’s identity is not being released, and the deceased pedestrian’s name will not be released until proper next-of-kin notification has been made.
Additional assistance at the scene was provided by the New Hampshire State Medical Examiner’s Office, the Dover and Rollinsford police departments, and Somersworth Public Works.
