Project Lifesaver Helps Brunswick Police Quickly Locate Missing Man

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Brunswick Police located a missing 64-year-old man within 15 minutes on Wednesday afternoon using the department’s Project Lifesaver program.
According to a Brunswick Police media release, communications received a report at 3:04 p.m. of a missing person in the area of Old Portland Road. Officers Benier and Day responded with Project Lifesaver equipment, located the individual, and returned him safely to his family.
Project Lifesaver International is a community-based program used by law enforcement, fire/rescue, and caregivers to protect individuals who are prone to wandering due to cognitive conditions. Enrolled participants wear a small wrist or ankle transmitter that emits a unique radio frequency. When a participant is reported missing, trained personnel use the assigned frequency to track and locate the person.
Brunswick Police noted the program is in its eleventh year locally. Funding support has included grants from the Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association of America, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance – Kevin & Avonte Program.
According to the release, twelve public safety agencies in Maine currently utilize Project Lifesaver:

Office of Emergency Management
Lewiston Police Department
Auburn Police Department
