Portsmouth Police say an officer discontinued a traffic stop for safety after a reckless e-bike rider fled Wednesday night; the department is asking witnesses and anyone with video to come forward.

According to the release, at about 9:50 p.m. Officer Joseph Melanson attempted to stop an e-bike on Route 33 for tailgating, traveling over 40 mph, and operating in dark clothing without lights or reflective material. When the cruiser’s emergency lights were activated, the rider looked back and turned onto Borthwick Avenue, then drove onto the grass, nearly striking a telephone pole, and headed toward the pedestrian bridge to Harvard Street. The stop was discontinued in the interest of safety.

The department notes an increase in reckless e-bike operation and encourages residents to report unsafe acts. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has surveillance footage is asked to contact Officer Melanson at melansonj@portsmouthnhpd.gov or 603-531-3555. Anonymous tips may be made at 603-431-1199 or via https://seacoastcrimestoppers.com/submit-a-tip. Resources on New Hampshire e-bike laws are available at the Portsmouth Police Department.
