A seven-year-old girl was rescued from a burning camper in Oxford on Tuesday afternoon and flown to a Portland hospital, as state fire investigators work to determine the cause.
Shortly before 5:00 p.m., Oxford Fire Department responded to a reported camper fire at 72 Gore Road. Firefighters entered the camper and rescued a seven-year-old girl; the fire was quickly extinguished. The child was transported by Oxford Fire-Rescue to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway and later flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland. She is expected to survive.
A three-year-old sibling who had been inside the camper at the time of the fire was able to get out before firefighters arrived. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to investigate. Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been accidentally started by the younger child playing with a lighter.
All occupants of the property have been cooperative with investigators. The home and another camper on the property were not damaged, and no other injuries were reported. The investigation remains ongoing.
