The Professional Fire Fighters of Maine (PFFMaine) says a contract dispute between Anthem and Northern Light Health is disrupting care for public employees and could raise out-of-pocket costs for thousands of Mainers.
PFFMaine states that, effective October 1, 2024, Northern Light’s non-hospital providers—including primary care doctors, specialists, and other essential services—are considered out-of-network for Anthem policyholders. According to the union, this change affects approximately 30,000 Mainers, many of whom are public sector employees.
PFFMaine calls on both Anthem and Northern Light to return to good-faith negotiations and prioritize uninterrupted access to trusted providers. In the meantime, the union outlines steps it is taking:
Advocacy: Public campaign with other unions to raise awareness.
Political action: Urging the Governor, state legislators, and the Maine Bureau of Insurance to explore options for restoring access and continuity of care.
Member support: Guidance on rights, including continuity-of-care protections, appeals, and alternative care options.
Legal review: Examining whether Anthem’s actions violate collectively bargained health benefits and exploring legal remedies.
The union encourages affected members to contact their union representatives and HR departments, keep all documentation from Anthem, Northern Light, and employers, and apply for continuity of care if undergoing critical treatments.
PFFMaine represents more than 1,400 firefighters and emergency medical professionals statewide.
