A report of a pickup truck operating erratically on Spring Street escalated into a serious crash Tuesday afternoon, prompting a multi-agency investigation and leaving a dog critically injured.
At approximately 2:21 p.m., the Westbrook Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a vehicle driving erratically on Spring Street near the intersection with County Road. The caller reported seeing a white pickup truck leave the roadway and stated the driver either experienced a seizure or overdosed. While the reporting party remained on the phone with dispatchers, the operator of the pickup drove off.
Uniformed patrol officers in marked Westbrook Police Department cruisers located the pickup traveling northbound on Spring Street and attempted to stop it due to the reported erratic operation. Police said the operator did not stop. During the attempted stop, the pickup passed numerous vehicles and nearly collided head-on with a responding police cruiser.
The operator then crashed into the rear of a northbound semi truck and rolled over near 85 Spring Street, according to police. The operator was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
Westbrook Fire Rescue evaluated the driver at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Police stated the injuries are not life-threatening.
Police also reported that a small dog inside the pickup truck was grievously injured in the crash. Westbrook Police transported the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment.
The crash remains under investigation by the Westbrook Police Department with assistance from the Maine State Police. Police said additional information will be released in the near future, including the operator’s name, any criminal charges, and an update on the dog’s condition.
