MEDDYBEMPS, Maine — The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal house fire that occurred on Sunday evening at 624 Main Street in Meddybemps.

According to officials, the request for State Fire Marshal response came at approximately 5:58 p.m. on November 16, 2025. The local fire chief reported a strong possibility that the homeowner remained inside the residence. When firefighters arrived, they found the home fully engulfed, and flames had spread to a vehicle in the driveway.

Fire crews from more than a half-dozen departments responded and worked in heavy snow conditions to suppress the fire. A team of four State Fire Marshal Investigators arrived on scene and, at approximately 8:51 p.m., located the remains of an adult inside the home. The victim was removed and transported to a local funeral home, where a representative from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will work to confirm the victim’s identity and determine the cause of death.

State Fire Investigators returned to the scene today to continue their examination and determine the cause of the fire. No additional details about the victim or contributing factors were released by authorities at this time.

Officials emphasized the sequence of operations: initial reports of possible entrapment, arrival to a fully involved structure with extension to a nearby vehicle, multi-agency suppression under adverse weather, and the subsequent investigative response that led to the recovery. The investigation now proceeds through standard post-fire protocols, including on-scene analysis, evidence documentation, and medical examiner review for cause and identification.

Further updates will be provided by investigators as information becomes available.
