As Halloween night approaches, safety experts are reminding families to stay alert and take precautions to keep children safe while trick-or-treating. The combination of costumes, low light, and increased foot traffic can raise risks for accidents and injuries if proper care isn’t taken.
Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
Always accompany young children during trick-or-treating.
Plan routes that stay on sidewalks and in well-lit areas.
Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and treat bags.
Carry a flashlight or use a phone light for visibility.
Cross streets at corners and crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
Costume and Candy Safety
Choose flame-resistant costumes that fit properly to prevent tripping.
Avoid masks that block vision; use makeup or face paint instead.
Inspect all candy before eating and discard any unwrapped or suspicious items.
Remind children not to eat homemade treats from strangers.
Driver Safety Reminders
Drive slowly in residential neighborhoods.
Be alert for children who may run out between parked cars.
Eliminate distractions such as mobile devices while driving.
