The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety (MBHS), in coordination with NHTSA and law enforcement agencies statewide, will run a winter holiday high-visibility enforcement effort — Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over — from December 10, 2025 through January 1, 2026. The goal is to deter impaired driving and protect the traveling public.
MBHS reports that alcohol-impaired crashes and fatalities rise during the holiday period. During the 2022–2023 season, seven alcohol-involved fatal crashes resulted in 11 deaths.

“Driving impaired is illegal, dangerous, and never acceptable,” said Highway Safety Coordinator John Roma. “Law enforcement officers across Maine will be out in full force to stop impaired drivers and keep our roads safe. We urge everyone to make responsible choices and help protect themselves and others throughout the winter holiday season. Drunk driving crashes are preventable when road safety is a priority for all.”
MBHS Director Lauren Stewart reminds drivers to plan ahead if they intend to consume impairing food or drink — “if you feel different, you drive different.” Secure a sober driver or arrange a taxi or rideshare before heading out. If you cannot safely drive, give your keys to a sober driver. If a friend plans to drive after drinking, take the keys and help arrange a sober ride.
Anyone who sees a suspected impaired driver should contact local law enforcement immediately or dial 911. For more on impaired-driving risks and safety resources, visit the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety website.
