A 911 call reporting smoke in the kitchen at 26 St. James Avenue led Milton Fire-Rescue to a two-story waterfront camp, where crews located a hidden fire in a crawl space and brought it under control without injuries. The property remains habitable and will require only minor repairs.

According to the release, Strafford County Communications received the call at 1647. Ambulance 1 and the on-duty crew were returning from a patient transport at the time of the call. Engine 6 and Ambulance 1 arrived at 1656, and after a size-up, a first alarm assignment was requested to bring additional resources. While no visible flames were present, two hose lines were deployed and the fire was knocked down.

The first alarm assignment was quickly returned; however, command held mutual aid companies from Rochester and Farmington on scene to assist with locating and extinguishing the source. The fire was placed under control at 1759, and all units cleared at 1908.

The cause remains under investigation, with early findings indicating the area of origin was underneath the home in leaf litter and duff. The release notes ongoing drought and extremely dry fuel conditions and states that a prohibition on outside burning is currently in effect in the Town of Milton. Milton Fire-Rescue thanked Strafford County Dispatch, Rochester Fire Department, Farmington Fire Department, Somersworth Fire, Wakefield Fire, Frisbie EMS for on-scene assistance, and Berwick Fire Department for station coverage during the incident. The incident commander was Deputy Chief Jeff Roub; contact for the release is Captain Justin Bellen, PIO.
