The New Hampshire Attorney General issued a consumer alert warning job seekers about scams that use the names of New Hampshire businesses in texts and emails. The alert urges extra caution with online job searches and verification of any unsolicited contact.
Key guidance from the alert:
If you receive a text or email about a job, do not reply directly. Independently find the company’s website and call to verify the listing.
Some scammers conduct online “interviews” using borrowed profile photos. Verify the job with the company before any interview.
Legitimate employers do not ask applicants to pay for training or equipment. Be suspicious of checks sent to purchase items or any request to use or refund money via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire.
Funds made “available” after a check deposit can be reversed if the check later bounces; full processing can take weeks.
Do not send personal information (SSN, DOB, address, bank details) by email or text. Ask to submit through a company-provided, encrypted portal. Refusal to use secure channels is a red flag.
If you believe you’ve experienced consumer fraud, contact the NH DOJ Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau at DOJ-CPB@doj.nh.gov or 1-888-468-4454.
