Strafford County Sheriff Warns of Increase in Scam Calls During Holiday Season

December 23, 2025 — by Scanner Alerts Media

DOVER, N.H. — The Strafford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a noticeable increase in scam calls, emails, and text messages reported during the holiday season.

According to a press release issued Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Sheriff Kathryn Mone said scammers have been contacting residents in Strafford County while falsely claiming there are warrants for their arrest or outstanding court fines or fees. Officials said the fraudulent messages and calls are designed to pressure recipients into making immediate payments.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that scammers have been using the names of current or former employees of the Strafford County Sheriff’s Office to make the communications appear legitimate. In these cases, the scammers demand immediate payment using cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Authorities said some of the scams also involve AI-generated documents that may initially appear authentic. The scammers are known to use aggressive tactics and threaten arrest if payment is not made.

Sheriff Mone emphasized that a deputy sheriff will never contact an individual demanding immediate payment in cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency for any court-related matter or to resolve a warrant. Officials stated that all deputies serving official paperwork will be in a clearly marked county vehicle, wearing a clearly marked uniform, and carrying proper identification.

Residents who have concerns about the legitimacy of a call, email, or text message are encouraged to contact the Strafford County Dispatch Center at 603-742-4968. Dispatchers can verify whether the contact is associated with an official matter and can connect residents with a deputy if necessary.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that while it can be difficult to identify the individuals responsible for these scams, all reports received are investigated.

Residents are urged to remain cautious and to report suspicious activity to help protect themselves and others in the community.
