Student Struck by School Bus in Rockland; Life-Flighted to Portland

ROCKLAND, Maine — Rockland Police and Rockland Fire & EMS responded at approximately 2:20 p.m. Friday to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash at Broadway and Eliza Steele Drive involving an RSU 13 student.


According to police, the student was struck by a school bus and sustained life-threatening injuries. The child was transported to a hospital and then flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland.


Rockland Police said the investigation is active. The department is coordinating with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office and receiving assistance from the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit and the Crash Reconstruction Unit. No additional details were released, citing respect for the privacy of the victim and family.


RSU 13 confirmed the incident in a separate statement and said emergency services responded immediately and the student received prompt medical care. The district said the safety and well-being of students is its highest priority and that it is working closely with law enforcement and emergency responders as the investigation proceeds.


RSU 13 added that counseling services will be available for students and staff who may need support. The district said it will provide updates as appropriate and asked the community to keep the student and family in their thoughts.
