DURHAM, N.H. — A Belmont man was taken into custody following a multi-community pursuit on the Seacoast that ended in a prolonged standoff on Route 4 in Durham.
According to State Police, a be-on-the-lookout was issued Saturday, December 6, for a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 tied to an ongoing investigation in Belmont. At approximately 9:42 p.m., Strafford Police located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop in Strafford; the driver did not stop and a pursuit began.
State Troopers assumed command as the Dodge continued through several communities. In Somersworth, a minor passenger was let out of the truck. Police said the minor was not physically injured and was brought to a family member while the pursuit continued.
Tire deflation devices were used multiple times. The driver ultimately stopped on Route 4 in Durham but refused to exit the vehicle. The roadway was closed and negotiators engaged the driver during a multi-hour standoff.
The driver later exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. He was identified as Scott E. Newcomb, 55, of Belmont. State Police said Newcomb was released to the custody of the Belmont Police Department in connection with their investigation. In relation to the pursuit and standoff, Newcomb will be charged by State Police with kidnapping, reckless conduct, and disobeying an officer.
Agencies assisting included police from Durham, Belmont, Somersworth, Strafford, and Dover, along with the Durham Fire Department and McGregor Memorial EMS.
A court date is pending. No booking photo is available at this time. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Trooper First Class Nathan J. Sleight at Nathan.J.Sleight@dos.nh.gov.
