A 39-year-old Ellsworth man was seriously injured Sunday night after being struck while attempting to cross the Maine Turnpike near mile 32 in Biddeford; he was later located off the roadway and transported to a Portland hospital.
According to the release, at about 8:30 p.m., State Police were notified by Portland Police after truck driver Michael Kilmer, 68, of West Virginia, reported that his in-truck camera showed he had struck a pedestrian he initially believed was a deer. Troopers narrowed the location and directed rescue units to the area, where they found Jared Felling, 39, in a tall, marshy area just before the exit. Felling had serious leg and head injuries and was in the early stages of hypothermia. Troopers provided aid until Kennebunk Fire Rescue arrived and transported him to Maine Medical Center, where his injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Investigating troopers determined Felling had recently been stealing from vehicles off the Biddeford exit and was actively fleeing Biddeford Police when he attempted to cross the turnpike. Investigators also learned Felling had removed a court-ordered ankle monitor earlier in the day in Ellsworth. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office issued a temporary arrest warrant for Violation of Conditional Release.
