SWAN’S ISLAND, Maine — Swan’s Island Fire and EMS reports it has been awarded $1.444 million through Congressional Directed Spending for an addition to Station 2.

According to the department, the project will provide a dedicated training/meeting room and bring all trucks and equipment under one roof, which the agency says will enhance services for both year-round residents and summer visitors.

The department acknowledged assistance and support from several individuals and groups connected to the project. Fran and Eric Chetwynd were cited for their role in the grant writing process. Bob Fenney was recognized for volunteering architectural expertise and helping create blueprints. The department also thanked Sonny Sprague and the current Board of Selectmen for supporting the effort, along with community members who wrote letters of support.

Officials noted that island residents voted at town meeting to raise the funds required to apply for the grant. The department stated that notification of the award came via the offices of U.S. Senators Angus King and Susan Collins.

No additional project details were released at this time.
