PORTLAND, Maine — A Troop I Trooper initiated a traffic stop on Skyway Drive in Portland on Friday, October 17, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m. for a defective taillight, according to Maine State Police. The driver and registered owner was identified as Abdullahi Ahmed Mohamud, 29, of South Portland.
During the course of the roadside investigation, troopers determined that Mohamud was on bail conditions that prohibited him from using or possessing dangerous weapons and restricted him from being out between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Investigators reported that a search of the vehicle was conducted. According to State Police, that search resulted in the discovery of two stolen handguns inside the vehicle.
Following the discovery, Mohamud was taken into custody. State Police state he was charged with Violation of Conditions of Release and Receiving Stolen Property. After arrest processing, Mohamud was transported to the Cumberland County Jail. No additional information on court scheduling, additional evidence, or other involved individuals was included in the agency’s summary at the time of this release.
The incident narrative provided by State Police outlines a straightforward sequence: an equipment violation leading to a traffic stop; confirmation of active bail conditions with weapons and curfew restrictions; a vehicle search; and the recovery of two stolen firearms, followed by arrest and booking. The agency did not report any injuries, additional charges beyond those listed, or any disruption to nearby roadways during the stop.
Authorities note that the investigation remains ongoing. The release does not indicate whether the recovered firearms have been linked to other incidents, nor does it include owner-identification details for the stolen property. Any such determinations, along with further case updates, would come from subsequent official statements.
This report reflects only the facts contained in the State Police account: the time and location of the stop, the driver’s identity and bail conditions, the items recovered during the vehicle search, the charges brought forward, and the transport destination for custody. Scanner Alerts Media will update this article if State Police provide additional verified details.
