Sanford Police executed a search warrant Wednesday at a Trafton Street residence as part of an ongoing investigation into reported gunfire from Monday night.

Police said this investigation is separate from the shooting involving a Sanford Police officer that occurred later on Lebanon Street.

Police Obtain Search Warrant

According to Sanford Police, officers received a report Tuesday afternoon that shots had been heard at 13 Trafton Street the previous evening.

During their initial investigation, officers gathered evidence that police said appeared to corroborate the report and developed sufficient information to obtain a search warrant.

Police emphasized that the reported Trafton Street gunfire is a separate incident from the shooting that occurred later on Lebanon Street.

Tactical Teams Assist With Search

At approximately 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, Sanford Police executed the search warrant with assistance from the Southern Maine Special Response Team and Cumberland County Emergency Services Unit.

Police said residents may have heard loud noises during the initial entry. Those sounds were distractionary devices used by the tactical teams and may have sounded like gunshots or explosions.

Detectives collected evidence from the residence, and police cleared the scene after approximately four hours of activity.

Investigation Continues

Investigators will examine the evidence collected from the residence along with information obtained from other sources as they work to identify those responsible and determine whether charges are warranted.

The investigation remains active.
