Portland Police Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Man Dead Following Series of Incidents

A man was fatally shot by Portland Police Thursday night following a series of incidents that police say included reports of gunfire, threats involving a firearm, stolen vehicles and crashes.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office will investigate the officers’ use of deadly force.

Initial Reports of Gunfire

At approximately 9:32 p.m., the Portland Regional Communications Center began receiving calls reporting gunfire near Spring Street and Oak Street.

Portland Police responded but did not locate anyone.

A short time later, dispatchers received a report of a shirtless man armed with a firearm and threatening staff at Nova Seafood, located at 555 Commercial Street.

Police identified the man as Jacob Hastings.

Police Report Multiple Incidents

According to Portland Police, Hastings left the area in a stolen pickup truck before officers arrived.

Police subsequently received additional reports of crashes and vehicles being stolen at gunpoint.

Officers located Hastings on Congress Street and pursued the vehicle. Police said Hastings traveled down Franklin Arterial before entering the Casco Bay Lines property at 56 Commercial Street, where the vehicle crashed and became disabled.

Officer-Involved Shooting

According to the police account, Hastings fled on foot and officers pursued him into the outdoor terminal at Casco Bay Lines while giving him commands.

Police said Hastings did not follow those commands, reached toward his waistband and presented his hands as though he had a firearm in the direction of officers. Officers then fired at him.

Officers provided emergency medical aid. Portland MEDCU subsequently pronounced Hastings deceased at the scene.

Police said a firearm was later recovered from one of the stolen vehicles.

Attorney General Investigating

Portland Police identified the officers involved as Anthony George, Jordin Jackson and Greg Ishihara.

All three have been placed on administrative leave, which the department said is standard practice following an officer-involved deadly force incident.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office will investigate the officers’ use of deadly force.

Portland Police said no further information will be released at this time.
