UPDATE: Maine State Police Identify Victims in Tremont Murder-Suicide Investigation

TREMONT, Maine — Maine State Police have identified the two people found dead on Big Rocks Road in Tremont on December 23, 2025, and say the investigation has led them to believe the incident was a murder-suicide.
As previously reported, at approximately 8:57 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Southwest Harbor Police responded to a 911 call about an incident near Big Rocks Road in Tremont after a caller reported finding two deceased adults at the scene. Members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North responded and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths in coordination with Southwest Harbor Police. Members of the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team were also dispatched to process available evidence.
Maine State Police said the deceased were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta so autopsies could be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.
Investigators now believe the deceased are 78-year-old Jyoti Hawley of Tremont and 75-year-old William Hawley of Tremont. Maine State Police said Jyoti Hawley and William Hawley were husband and wife.
On Friday, December 26, 2025, autopsies were performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. Police said the cause of death for both individuals was determined to be gunshot wounds. The manner of death for Jyoti Hawley was ruled a homicide, and the manner of death for William Hawley was ruled a suicide.
Maine State Police said all involved parties have been identified and that the agency believes this is an isolated incident with no ongoing public safety concerns.
