A man who was seriously injured in a house fire Thursday afternoon in Augusta has died at Maine

Medical Center, according to authorities. The victim was identified as 66-year-old Michael Keith.

The Augusta Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 347 Riverside Drive at approximately 2:03 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters located a fire in the basement of a single-family home and found a male occupant outside the residence with severe burns, officials said.



Emergency Response and Medical Treatment



Authorities said the man was transported to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta and was later flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Officials later confirmed the victim died at Maine Medical Center.



Fire Marshal Investigation



Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Fire investigators said the fire originated in the basement and was caused by ignitable liquids being accidentally ignited near the chimney cleanout door. The investigation remains ongoing.
