Brunswick Police used an airboat to free a 31-year-old duck hunter who became trapped up to his waist in mud at Whartons Point in Maquoit Bay on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the release, at 2:11 p.m. on October 1, officers responded after Matthew Alexander of Topsham reported he could not get back to shore. He had been duck hunting, shot several ducks from an embankment, and sank while walking across the mud to retrieve them. Police said the more he struggled, the deeper he became.
Officers reached Alexander using the department’s Marine Patrol airboat. It took two officers to pull him free and break the suction. The ducks were later retrieved. Due to his time in ocean water, Alexander was transported by Brunswick Rescue to Mid Coast Hospital and later released. Police noted he gave permission for his name to be used.

The department reminds the public that coastal mud flats can contain hidden “honey pots” that act like quicksand.
