Generator, Heater Use Eyed in Harpswell House Fire; One Injured

Harpswell, Maine
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an early-morning structure fire that destroyed a home on Hugh Avenue in Harpswell and left one person injured.
According to officials, at approximately 2:40 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026, the Cumberland Regional Communication Center received reports of a structure fire at a residence located at 7 Hugh Avenue.
Occupants from 7 Hugh Avenue alerted neighbors at 5 Hugh Avenue. Fire departments from Harpswell, Brunswick, Orr’s Island, and Bailey Island evacuated the residents of 5 Hugh Avenue. Officials said those residents were safely evacuated and were not injured, and that home sustained minor heat-related damage.
At 7 Hugh Avenue, one adult male sustained a burn injury to his wrist and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The other three occupants were not injured. The home at 7 Hugh Avenue is considered a total loss.
Investigators said a generator and the use of a heater may have contributed to the fire. The investigation remains ongoing.
