Houlton Police issued a public service announcement after confirming multiple canine parvovirus (parvo) cases in the community, urging dog owners to act quickly if symptoms appear.
According to the announcement, parvo is a serious, highly contagious illness that can be fatal if left untreated or treated too late. Vaccination is highly effective when administered as directed by veterinarians. Puppies are most vulnerable, but older unvaccinated dogs and dogs with compromised immune systems are also at risk.
Owners should watch for vomiting, diarrhea, and extreme lethargy. If a dog shows these symptoms, it should be quarantined from other dogs immediately and seen by a veterinarian.
