
Investigators: Portland Fatal Apartment Fire Began on Rear Second-Floor Porch; No Foul Play Suspected

Fire investigators report that the fatal fire at a four-unit apartment building on St. Lawrence Street in Portland originated on the rear second-floor porch before spreading into the interior, causing significant damage; no foul play is suspected as the investigation continues.
According to the release, investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal and the Portland Fire Department, working with the Portland Police Department, are continuing to examine the cause of the September 21, 2025 fire. Two individuals died in the fire and are believed to be 45-year-old Nicole Nieoff and 40-year-old Jake Millett, both of Portland. Positive identification is pending with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The Office of State Fire Marshal recognized Portland Fire Department’s suppression efforts, which prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, and noted prior inspections by Portland Code Officials that enhanced life-safety measures and aided occupants in evacuating. The Office extended sympathies to the families and loved ones affected.
