Manslaughter Arrest Made in Fatal Rockland School Bus Incident

ROCKLAND, Maine — Rockland Police announced Thursday that an arrest has been made in connection with a fatal school bus incident that occurred in November 2025 and resulted in the death of a student.


According to police, Jeffrey Colburn, 65, of Camden, was arrested on January 15, 2026, and charged with Manslaughter (Class A). The arrest follows a grand jury indictment, and a warrant was issued by the Knox County District Attorney’s Office. Colburn was the school bus driver involved in the incident, which occurred on November 21, 2025.


Police said the investigation has been ongoing since the date of the incident. Members of the Rockland Police Department, including the Criminal Investigation Division, worked in coordination with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office throughout the process.


The investigation included interviews with numerous witnesses, review of relevant records, legal analysis, consultation with subject matter experts, and assistance from multiple agencies. Those agencies included the Maine State Police, Bureau of Highway Safety, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Maine Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and RSU-13.


In a message issued on November 26, 2025, Rockland Police Chief Carroll expressed condolences on behalf of the City of Rockland and the Rockland Police Department to the family of Brayden, stating that the incident was a tragic event affecting the entire community.
