MILTON, N.H. — Milton Police Department K9 Red has received a bullet- and stab-protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vest was sponsored by a fundraiser hosted by the Connecticut Chapter of CPCU and is embroidered with the sentiment: “This gift of protection provided by CT CPCU Chapter.”
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., founded in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides U.S.-made, custom-fitted, NIJ-certified protective vests and other assistance to law enforcement K9s nationwide. Since its inception, the organization has provided more than 6,225 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states through private and corporate donations.
The program is open to U.S. law enforcement and related-agency dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified. K9s with expired vests are also eligible. Each vest has a value of $1,800, weighs an average of 4–5 pounds, and carries a five-year warranty. The organization estimates there are roughly 30,000 law enforcement K9s serving across the country.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount. A single donation of $1,050 sponsors one vest. For details on donations and volunteer opportunities, the nonprofit can be reached at (508) 824-6978, online at www.vik9s.org, or by mail at P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.
