KITTERY, Maine — A 35-year-old New York man was seriously injured Friday morning after climbing onto the roof of a moving passenger bus on the Maine Turnpike near mile marker 2 southbound in Kittery.

At approximately 11:17 a.m., the Maine State Police received reports that a man had fallen from the roof of a southbound bus. Troopers responded and found several civilians—both passing motorists and bus passengers—rendering aid on the shoulder of the roadway. The injured man was identified as Derrick McDuffy, 35, of New York.

According to witness statements provided to investigators, McDuffy said he felt overheated while inside the bus. He then opened the vehicle’s emergency roof access hatch and climbed onto the roof while the bus was in motion. Upon realizing what was happening, the driver began slowing the bus and attempting to pull over. Before the bus came to a complete stop, McDuffy fell from the roof to the roadway, coming to rest on the right shoulder.

Kittery Fire/EMS transported McDuffy to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with injuries described as serious but not believed to be life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.

The bus involved was operated by Concord Coach Lines. A replacement bus arrived to take the remaining passengers from the scene. Traffic in the immediate area briefly slowed during the response but was not significantly impacted, police said.

Personnel from the Kittery Police Department and Kittery Fire/EMS assisted Maine State Police on scene. The investigation remains ongoing. No further details were released.
