South Portland police say crisis negotiators safely deescalated a situation at Spring Point Lighthouse on the SMCC campus after reports of a man threatening suicide with a handgun.

According to the release, at about 8:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area and located a 51-year-old Westbrook man in a courtyard near the entrance to the breakwater walkway.

SMCC Security placed the school in lockdown while South Portland officers—assigned as Crisis Negotiators with the Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team—engaged the subject in person and by phone. The man surrendered peacefully to nearby officers and was transported by South Portland Fire Rescue to a hospital.

No injuries were reported, and no criminal charges were filed.
