FORT FAIRFIELD — The Fort Fairfield Police Department is investigating a crash on Main Street involving an SUV and an Amish buggy.
At approximately 6:34 p.m., a caller reported coming upon a damaged Amish buggy near 300 Main Street with two Amish individuals walking nearby. Officers and EMS arrived and determined that Mahlon Swartzentruber, 33, of Fort Fairfield, and a 16-year-old passenger were struck from behind by a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler that did not stop and continued eastbound on Main Street.
After the impact, the buggy collided with a parked pickup truck along the street. Minor injuries were reported; no one was transported by EMS. The horse was not injured.
The incident remains under investigation. Officers are checking cameras and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash—or who has cameras facing Main Street east of 300 Main Street—to contact (207) 472-3808, reference this incident, and ask for Officer Daniel Varnum.
