WATERVILLE, Maine — The Waterville Fire Department responded to a building fire at 6 Water St. on Friday. The initial alarm was received at 18:27, and the first units arrived at 18:29, reporting audible alarms and an ongoing evacuation.
Water was observed running between floors at the northwest corner of the structure, and smoke was present in the stairwell. A second alarm was transmitted, bringing the Winslow Fire Department to the scene.
Fire crews located a smoldering fire in a construction zone on the fifth floor. According to officials, the building’s sprinkler system largely contained the fire, and no extension was found.
Because of water damage and disabled fire protection systems, on-site officials directed the relocation of residents. At present, only the third floor is occupied at the Lockwood Mill apartment renovation. Working with the Waterville Housing Authority, all occupants were transported and provided temporary lodging at a nearby hotel.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office. Questions related to the investigation should be directed to that office.
Officials reminded residents and business owners of the importance of properly maintaining fire alarm and sprinkler systems, noting that such systems save lives and should never be impaired or disabled.
The Waterville Fire Department expressed appreciation for assistance from mutual-aid partners, including the Winslow Fire Department.
