Suspicious Device Found During Newcastle Traffic Stop; Bomb Team Called

Deputies conducting a midnight traffic stop on Main Street in Newcastle located a suspected explosive device in a vehicle, prompting assistance from the Maine State Police Bomb Team and the Office of State Fire Marshal.
Shortly after midnight on Monday, September 22, 2025, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant and transported to the Lincoln County Jail. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, deputies found material resembling an explosive device. Out of caution, the Maine State Police Bomb Team and the Office of State Fire Marshal responded, secured the item, and removed it for further evaluation, including laboratory analysis.
Given the evidence recovered, the Office of State Fire Marshal has assumed lead investigative responsibility. Identities are being withheld while the investigation continues. Further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
