The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says three people have been arrested following an attempted fraud investigation involving banks in Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Wiscasset Police Department responded at about 1:30 p.m. on January 16, 2026, to First National Bank in Wiscasset for a report of attempted fraud. Investigators said a male suspect allegedly impersonated a customer using the customer’s information on a fraudulent military identification card and attempted to withdraw $6,700 from the victim’s account.
Police said the suspect was unable to answer security questions and left the bank on foot. He was described as wearing a white leather jacket, using a cane, and having an earpiece. Authorities said those items are consistent with tactics seen in organized imposter fraud schemes.
Investigators said the same suspect attempted an identical transaction about 30 minutes earlier at a bank in Boothbay Harbor using the same victim’s account information.
A security photo was shared with regional law enforcement, and the suspect was later seen entering a black SUV near a bank in Brunswick, according to investigators. Brunswick Police stopped the vehicle and identified the occupants as George Mendez, 66; Miguel Molinar, 35; and Leigh A. Jackson, 34, all of Brooklyn, New York.
Authorities said the three were found in possession of fraudulent identification, including fictitious passports, military identification cards, and state-issued licenses. Investigators also reported locating notes containing sensitive customer information inside the vehicle, leading them to believe there may be additional victims.
All three were charged with Class C Theft by Deception, Misuse of Identification, and Criminal Conspiracy. Officials said they are being held on $10,000 cash bail at Two Bridges Jail.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said it was assisted by Wiscasset Police, Boothbay Harbor Police, Brunswick Police, Freeport Police, and local financial institutions during the investigation.
