Smoke Alarms Provide Early Warning

The West Paris Fire Department responded to 31 Smith Street at approximately 3:41 a.m. following a 911 call reporting a structure fire.

Three occupants and two dogs were able to escape the residence without injury. One cat died in the fire.

The residence was equipped with smoke alarms that activated during the fire. Officials said the early warning helped alert the occupants and allowed them to escape safely.

Fire Marshal Determines Cause

At the request of the West Paris Fire Chief, investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Following interviews and an examination of the scene, investigators determined that the fire originated in the basement.
