Two People Found Deceased in Portland Apartment Fire; Investigation Ongoing

An early-morning fire at a three-story, four-unit apartment building on St. Lawrence Street in Portland left two people deceased and prompted a joint investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, Portland Fire Department, and Portland Police Department.
According to the release, at approximately 2:17 a.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the Portland Fire Department responded to 43 St. Lawrence Street. Crews encountered heavy fire on the rear porch and confirmed evacuation efforts were underway. During suppression efforts, two individuals were found deceased inside the structure. Both were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for autopsies to determine cause of death and confirm identification.
Investigators conducted an origin-and-cause investigation throughout the day, and the fire remains under investigation.
