State Police Investigate Knox Shooting; Three Masked Suspects Sought, Victim Has Non-Life-Threatening Injuries

KNOX, Maine — The Maine State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred at 1580 Bailey Road in Knox on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at approximately 4:25 p.m. Troopers from the Central Field Troop responded after a report of a person shot at the residence.


According to State Police, the victim is 40-year-old Astin Elwell of Knox. Prior to Troopers’ arrival, Elwell was driven to Waldo General Hospital in Belfast. She was later transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with non-life-threatening injuries.


A preliminary investigation indicates that three males arrived at the residence in a gold/tan Jeep Cherokee. The males were wearing ski masks, and one of them shot Elwell as she answered the door, investigators said. The suspects fled the scene immediately afterward.


While processing the area, Troopers located a vehicle of interest behind a nearby residence. The vehicle was seized for evidence processing. As of the time of the release, the three males had not been located.


State Police stated there is no known risk to the public and that the incident is believed to be isolated. The Maine State Police Evidence Response Team continued working through the evening to collect evidence related to the case.


Assisting agencies included the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, and local EMS/Fire departments. Officials did not release additional details regarding further investigative steps, suspect descriptions beyond the masks and vehicle color, or any related enforcement activity.
