UPDATE: Lewiston Man Charged With Arson Following Libby Avenue Fire

A Lewiston man has been charged with arson following an investigation into Monday night’s structure fire on Libby Avenue, according to the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Treven Stoops, 38, of Lewiston, was arrested Tuesday afternoon by State Fire Marshal investigators. No people were injured in the fire, but several pet birds inside the residence died.

Arrest Follows Overnight Investigation

The Lewiston Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 14 Libby Avenue at approximately 7:11 p.m. Monday, August 31.

State Fire Marshal investigators were requested to the scene and worked throughout Monday evening and into the early morning hours Tuesday to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office announced Tuesday afternoon that investigators had arrested Stoops and charged him with arson in connection with the fire.

According to officials, Stoops had been living at the Libby Avenue residence with his girlfriend.

No Human Injuries Reported

No people were injured as a result of the fire. Officials said several pet birds that were inside the home died.

At the time of his arrest on the arson charge, Stoops was already being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on unrelated charges.

His bail was set at $5,000 cash, and he is expected to make his initial court appearance later this week.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, Lewiston Police Department and Lewiston Fire Department, with assistance from the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.

All charges are allegations. Stoops is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
