Wells, Maine
The Wells Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire on the Maine Turnpike northbound near mile marker 23 on January 23, 2026, at approximately 1:32 p.m.
Wells Fire officials said crews responded with Engine 3, Tank 2, and the Chief, along with Wells EMS, with smoke visible from several miles away. Upon arrival, firefighters reported finding a fully involved SUV fire in the breakdown lane. A station coverage recall was requested as crews began operations.
Firefighters quickly deployed an 1¾-inch hoseline and had water on the fire almost immediately. Tank 2 supplied Engine 3, and the Maine State Police closed the two nearest lanes to support firefighter safety during suppression efforts.
No injuries were reported. Officials said that within approximately 20 minutes, crews were picking up and turned the scene back over to the Maine State Police before returning to service. An Ogunquit engine provided station coverage for Wells until off-duty personnel arrived.
Wells Fire thanked assisting agencies, including Wells EMS, Maine State Police, Ogunquit Fire, and Maine Turnpike Authority personnel.
